Ikea Powers Up Solar Energy in New York

The solar energy system at Ikea’s home furnishings store in Brooklyn, N.Y. is now commissioned, operational and certified by Con Edison and New York City.

ikea storeAs one of the largest commercial rooftop installations in the five boroughs of New York City, the 200 kW array occupies 19,000-square feet, with four different types of modules totaling 1,104 panels.

Ikea Brooklyn will generate 240,000 kWh of renewable electricity annually for the store, the equivalent of reducing 365,615 pounds of carbon dioxide, eliminating the emissions of 32 cars, or providing electricity for 20 homes yearly, according to Ikea calculations.

The Brooklyn store also has 70,000 square feet of green roof, a 6.5-acre waterfront esplanade, multiple transit options, and has been awarded Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design silver certification by the U.S. Green Building Council.
