Food Lion Unveils New LEED Store in North Caroline

Food Lion opened its second Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certified store in Fayetteville, N.C., which also includes an onsite recycling center, educational kiosks and preferred parking for carpool vehicles.

Food Lion store The stores has an array of environmentally friendly features such as LED lighting in the frozen food cases, low-flow and sensor-activated water fixtures in restrooms, native plant species that eliminate irrigation requirements, enhanced air quality for associates and customers through the use of low-toxicity materials and a proactive management plan throughout construction that ensured optimal indoor air quality, the company said. The store also includes bike racks, preferred parking for carpool vehicles and an environmental education kiosk.

Food Lion also purchasing a significant amount of building materials manufactured within 500 miles of the store location to boost local economies and reduce energy expended on transportation. They also implemented waste management plans to divert construction waste from landfills through recycling.

“By building the second LEED grocery store in our company’s history and in Fayetteville, N.C., we will reduce energy costs by more than 20 percent compared to a typical supermarket, as well as conserve 40 percent more water than other Food Lion stores,” said Kyle Mitchell, vice president of store development for Delhaize America South. “Food Lion has one of the most advanced retail energy conservation programs in the country. For a decade, Food Lion has been dedicated to numerous sustainability initiatives, such as energy conservation and reducing carbon dioxide emissions throughout its 11-state footprint, reducing its energy consumption by more than 27 percent since 2000 or 2.5 trillion BTUs.”

As part of the grand opening celebration, the first 200 customers who entered the store received a free reusable shopping bag filled with Food Lion store branded groceries.

The 35,000-square-foot store also features a customer and associate recycling program. Based in Salisbury, N.C., Food Lion operates more than 1,300 supermarkets under the of Food Lion, Harveys and Reid’s banners.
