Walgreens will celebrate its 100th solar powered store in Mason, Ohio, Friday with a ceremony and special guest speaker, Nancy Sutley, chair of the White House Council on Environmental Quality.

By the end of the year, Walgreen’s expects to add another 36 solar powered retail locations in Ohio for a total of 136 sites, which would make it the largest operator of retail solar installations in the country.

SoCore Energy, a Chicago-based solar developer, is under contract to provide 90 Ohio solar installations for Walgreens. The first 53 will be completed by November 11, according to SoCor, which has chosen Power-One Inc. as its exclusive provider of inverters for these projects. Walgreens will lease the arrays from SoCore for 10 years.
