To get its arms around the impacts of its food packaging, Marks & Spencer has selected the Packaging Impact Quick Evaluation Tool (PIQET), software designed by the Australia-based Sustainable Packaging Alliance (SPA)

The software uses data sets particular to specific regions of the world, including North America, South America, Asia, India and Europe, according to Environmental Leader. PIQET evaluates packaging based on materials, water and electricity used, manufacturing processes, product origin, transportation and disposal.

Companies using PIQET can get an assessment of their packaging within 20 to 25 minutes compared to many months that can be spent doing full life-cycle assessment, according to SPA. “This makes it a helpful tool in the design phase, allowing users to model impacts before committing to any one design,” according to SPA .

As part of its Plan A environmental and ethical program, Marks & Spencer aims to become the world’s most sustainable major retailer by 2015.

In March, L’Oreal announced its is also using PIQET to analyze its packaging.
