Frito-Lay's new distribution facility in Oahu, Hawaii has earned the U.S. Green Building Council Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Gold certification.
The 55,000 square foot design is Hawaii's first industrial new construction to earn LEED gold certification.
Some features of the energy-efficient construction include and energy management system to control facility equipment; solar panels that will generate 10 percent of the facility's electricity, parking on the roof to reduce the amount of the site that needed to be paved, energy efficient windows and skylights to provide ample daylight, light colored paved surfaces to reduce the “heat island” effect, reserved parking for carpools and energy efficient vehicles, and high efficiency LED lighting was used in the parking lots.
Construction materials were selected for recycle content, regionally manufactured or low levels of volatile organic compounds, Frito-Lay said in a statement. Installing low-flow plumbing fixtures also reduced water use, and low-maintenance native plants were incorporated into the landscaping design.
Frito-Lay North America is the $13 billion convenient foods business unit of Purchase, N.Y.-based PepsiCo.
