OfficeMax has launched a shipping box reuse program called Boomerang Box, which will reduce the office supply company’s delivery packaging and reduce waste.

Boomerang BoxBusinesses that participate in the free Boomerang Box program will have their office supplies delivered by OfficeMax in reusable, stackable delivery boxes that are made from a minimum of 50 percent post-consumer content. Customers need only to save and stack the boxes for OfficeMax's fleet to pickup with the next order delivery. The cycle continues until the boxes can no longer be reused. Then, OfficeMax will recover the boxes for recycling.

The program launched in Seattle and will roll out nationwide in the second half of the year. OfficeMax's estimates that the programs could reduce box use by 80 percent and will significantly reduce workplace recycling.

"Every business wants to support more environmentally sustainable practices," said Sue Mills, director, environmental practices at OfficeMax. "With Boomerang Box we're giving customers an easy, no-cost way to help do that."

Last year, competitor Office Depot launched Greener Shipping, a program that eliminates boxes in favor of paper bags, which is used by a majority of its business customers.

Competitor Office Depot, meanwhile, has taken a different route to achieving sustainable deliveries. It runs a program called Greener Shipping that eliminates cardboard delivery boxes in favor of bags. The program also gives rebates to customers who increased their average order size and reduced frequent deliveries, which in turn reduced shipping emissions and packaging.
