Leading Foodservice and Hospitality Companies Sign U.K. Waste Agreement

Seventy three leading U.K. hotels, pubs, restaurants, quick service restaurants, contract caterers and government departments have signed the Hospitality and Food Service Agreement, committing to cut waste by 5 percent by 2015.

Company signers include Domino’s Pizza, McDonald’s Restaurants Ltd, and Unilever Food Solutions. If only 25 percent of the foodservice and hospitality industry were to sign the agreement, U.K. businesses could save up to $118 million by end of 2015, according to Waste and Resources Action Program (WRAP).

The companies also committed to increase to 70 percent the overall rate of food and packaging waste that is being recycled, sent to anaerobic digestion or composted.

The voluntary agreement was launched by WRAP on behalf of the U.K., Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland governments, builds on WRAP’s research, and work already undertaken by the sector to tackle waste. It also delivers on all four governments’ commitment to tackle waste and carbon.

Organizations that sign the agreement either join as signatories or supporters, depending on their role within the sector, with signatories reporting directly against the two main targets. Of the 73 organizations signed up to the agreement, 28 are signatories and 45 are supporters.
