U.K. retailers Tesco and John Lewis Partnership are joining 10 other companies that are participating in the British government’s test of more than 300 low-carbon commercial vehicles.
The programs is spearheaded by The Technology Strategy Board and the Department for Transport and the Office for Low Emission Vehicles, according to an Environmental Leader report, which noted the price tag of the program at $36.3 million, half of which is funded by the government. The two-year trial program will also install and test 11 new publicly accessible low-carbon fueling stations.
Other companies participating in the trial are United Biscuits, Ascott Transport, Brit European Transport, CNG Services, G-Volution, Howard Tenens Associates, J.B. Wheaton and Sons, T Baden Hardstaff, Robert Wiseman Dairies and BOC Group.
Under the program Tesco said it plans to introduce 35 dual-fuel tractor units at its frozen food distribution center using large-scale commercial liquid natural gas and a biogas refueling station that Gasrec is installing nearby, according to a BusinessGreen report.
John Lewis “will substitute diesel with bio-methane, and improve the aerodynamics of its articulated vehicles in an effort to reduce the trucks’ carbon emissions by 70 percent,” according to the Environmental Leader report.
