Marks & Spencer has opened its newest eco-friendly store in Cheshire Oaks, which features sustainably sourced timber with hemp and lime used as insulation, and is using a reclamation system to heat the store.
The 151,000 square-foot store will take 70 percent of its heating requirements from a heat reclamation and biomass boiler. Meanwhile landscaping around the store is designed to promote native flora and fauna.
"In line with our strategy to develop an exciting, easy to shop retail experience for our customers, our Cheshire Oaks store encapsulates the latest and very best of M&S design and cutting-edge retail technology,” said Steve Rowe, M&S director of retail.
The hemp wall insulation panels are also carbon-absorbing and extremely strong. The timber used to construct the store’s roof and first floor is Forest Stewardship Council certified engineered softwood (Glulam), according to a Planet Retail report.
M&S’s newest stores are 30 percent more energy efficient than the company’s standard stores, the retailer reports.
