BASF reports it has made “a game-changing breakthrough” toward sustainable snack packaging with its new compostable snack bag.
BASF has partnered
with Major League Baseball team, The Seattle Mariners to debut the prototype packaging on the team’s peanuts. The first 10,000 fans to arrive at Safeco Field at yesterday’s game received a free bag of peanuts in the 100 percent compostable bag developed with advanced biopolymer technology.
“Flexible packaging with this BASF technology is a big step forward for the snack food industry,” said Kimberley Schiltz, market development manager Consumer Packaging, BASF. “It means that popular snack foods can be brought to market in compostable packaging that delivers needed shelf-life at a competitive price point, with a more sustainable ‘end-of-life’ solution than with conventional packaging materials.”
The Seattle Mariners team is a member of the Green Sports Alliance, and has aggressive zero-waste goals. This season, the team is on track to divert 85 percent of its waste from landfills, up from just 12 percent in “All of our service ware is already compostable, but snack food bags have been one of the biggest barriers preventing us from getting to our goal,” said Scott Jenkins, vice president of operations for the Mariners. “Flexible packaging made with BASF biopolymers could represent the holy grail of greening for our waste stream.”
Several years ago, Frito-Lay introduced compostable snack bags but customers complained that the packaging was too noisy. BASF claims it has fully addressed that problem, but did not specify how. It only said, “BASF’s biopolymers technology can meet [customer] expectations and provide a viable solution to the snack food packaging industry.”
