Despite increasing production, premium beverages company Diageo reduced carbon emissions from its operations by 9.4 percent and improved water efficiency by 7.2 percent this past year.
Since the 2007 baseline year, Diageo has reduced carbon emissions by 22 percent, according to its 10th annual sustainability report. “We are aiming to reduce our carbon emissions by half in absolute terms, which has meant changing the relationship between production and the use of fossil fuels,” the company wrote in its report. “Through a variety of activities, we have been able to grow our business while reducing the carbon emissions associated with our value chain, as well as our risk exposure to energy insecurity and rising costs.”
The company also reduced the amount of water used at water stressed sites by 8.6 percent, and also supported 200 projects since 2006 that provide access to safe drinking water for people in Africa with a goal of reaching eight million people by 2015.
“Driving strong performance in sustainability and responsibility is in the long-term interests of our company. It helps ensure that we can both deliver returns to shareholders and benefit the communities whose lives we touch,” said Paul Walsh, CEO. “It is my firm belief that the most genuinely strategic and forward-looking businesses treat sustainability as a core component of business delivery.”
Diageo is the world's leading premium drinks manufacturer and distributor whose brands include Johnnie Walker, Crown Royal, J&B, Buchanan’s, Windsor and Bushmills whiskies, Smirnoff, Cîroc and Ketel One vodkas, Baileys, Captain Morgan, Jose Cuervo, Tanqueray and Guinness.
