Ikea has plugged in solar power at its store in Bloomington, Minn., which now houses the state’s largest photovoltaic (PV) array.

The 128,000-square-foot PV array consists of a 1,014-kW system, built with 4,316 panels. The store will produce approximately 1,161,328 kWh of clean electricity annually, the equivalent of reducing 801 tons of carbon dioxide, according the home furnishings retailer.

Ikea contracted with SoCore Energy, which has more than 65 commercial PV installations in the United States, to develop the Bloomington store solar system.

This installation represents the 31st completed solar project for Ikea in the U.S., with eight more locations underway, making the eventual U.S. solar presence of Ikea nearly 89 percent of its U.S. locations with a total generation of 38 mega watts.

Ikea owns and operates all of its solar energy systems atop its buildings. Globally, Ikea has allocated $762 million to invest in renewable energy, focusing on solar and wind during the coming three years. More than 250,000 solar panels have been installed on Ikea stores and buildings globally. The company also owns and/or operates approximately 110 wind turbines in Europe.
