Target and H&M were notable retailers added to the international Dow Jones Sustainability Index this year, joined by other U.S. market leaders including Microsoft, Hewlett-Packard, Baker Hughes and Ecolab.
The index, released jointly by Swiss investment firm SAM and Dow Jones Index, tracks the financial performance of leading sustainability-driven companies worldwide. This year 41 companies were added and 41 removed, yielding 340 named companies to the list.
The index invites the world’s 2,500 largest companies, based on free-float market capitalization, from 58 sectors to report annually on their sustainability performance. SAM then conducts a Corporate Sustainability Assessment, an in-depth analysis of economic, environmental and social criteria, for each company.
Each year, the top companies in 19 super sectors are named. Unilever was named in the food and beverage sector as well as automaker BMW, chemical company Akzo Nobel, healthcare company Roche Holding and Siemens in the industrial goods sector.
