Ikea plugged in the solar energy system installed at its distribution center near Savannah, Ga., – the state’s largest private solar rooftop array.
The 182,300-square-foot photovoltaic (PV) array consists of a 1,458.2 kW system built with 6,076 solar panels. The distribution center will produce approximately 1.97 million kWh of clean electricity annually.
Gehrlicher Solar America Corp. developed, designed and installed the distribution center’s solar system.
The new installation represents the 34th completed solar project for Ikea in the U.S., with five more locations underway, making Ikea’s eventual U.S. solar presence nearly 89 percent of its U.S. locations, generating a total of 38 MW.
Ikea owns and operates all of its solar PV energy systems atop its buildings and globally has allocated $760 million to invest in renewable energy, focusing on solar and wind during the coming three years.
More than 250,000 solar panels have been installed on Ikea stores and buildings across the world. The company also owns and/or operates approximately 110 wind turbines in Europe.
