As green roofs become more popular for environmentally-sensitive, sustainable buildings, monitoring and documenting their performance has become equally important.

Green Roof imageA new free 12-page best practices guide from Onset, titled “Monitoring Green Roof Performance with Weather Stations,” discusses the importance of monitoring and documenting green roof performance, and explains how data logging weather stations can help measure stormwater runoff, improve irrigation scheduling, and help maintain healthy rooftop vegetation. It also includes tips and guidance on selecting and deploying weather stations for green roof monitoring projects. Onset is a leading supplier of data loggers.

The guide also outlines the benefits of investing in green roofs, design, stormwater management, heat island effect mitigation, plant maintenance, offset of interior heating and cooling costs as well as weather station deployment tips.

“In order to verify that a green roof is indeed providing the benefits to justify the investment, it’s important to monitor performance,” Onset wrote in the guide introduction. “For building projects participating in the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Green Building Rating System, documentation of green roof performance is a requirement.”

Based on Cape Cod, Mass., Onset reports it has sold more than 2 million data loggers since the company’s founding in 1981. Data loggers are used for a broad range of monitoring applications, from verifying the performance of green buildings and renewable energy systems to agricultural and coastal research, according to the company.
