Kohl’s, Walmart, Whole Foods, Staples and Starbucks all made it into the top 10 of the Environmental Protection Agency’s Green Power Rankings announced this week.

Kohl’s is ranked No. 2 overall using 1.5 billion kilowatt hours of green power, only behind Intel on a national level which uses 2.8 billion kwh of green power. Walmart is ranked No. 4, Whole Foods No. 5, Staples No. 8 and Starbucks No. 10.

The Green Power Top Partner Rankings highlight the annual green power use of leading organizations within the United States and across individual industry sectors.

Using green power helps reduce the environmental impacts of electricity use and supports the development of new renewable generation capacity nationwide, according to EPA. Usage amounts in the report reflect U.S. operations only and are sourced from U.S.-based green power resources.

Organizations can meet EPA Partnership requirements using any combination of three different product options: Renewable energy certificates, on-site generation and utility green power products.

Other retailers to make the list included McDonalds, Sprint, Ahold, Safeway and Best Buy

Green power usage figures are based on annualized contract amounts (kilowatt-hours), not calendar year totals. The rankings are updated quarterly. This quarter’s rankings are based on data EPA received as of Oct. 4, 2012.
