Ikea said it plans to become energy and resource independent by 2020, which it will accomplish by investing $1.8 billion in various wind and solar projects.
In addition to energy and resource independence, the retailer’s new sustainability strategy, called People & Planet Positive, includes two other focus areas:
- Inspiring and enabling millions of people to live a more sustainable life at home, offering products and solutions that help customers save money by using less energy and water and reducing waste; and
- Taking the lead in creating a better life for the people and communities it serves, which includes supporting the development of good places to work throughout the Ikea Group supply chain.
“We want to create a better every day for the many people. A better life includes living more sustainably,” said Mikael Ohlsson, President and CEO, Ikea Group. We have been working towards that goal for many years and have already done a lot, and we are now ready to take the next big step. People & Planet Positive will help us to do that; transforming our business and having an even greater positive impact on the world.”
In addition to wind and solar projects, Ikea has committed to improving the energy efficiency of Ikea Group operations by at least 20 percent and is encouraging suppliers to do the same. It also plans to make products more sustainable by using home furnishing and packaging materials that are renewable, recycled or recyclable.
In the U.S., Ikea has increased the number of solar installations to 34 stores and distribution centers, with five more underway, which represents 90 percent of the retailer’s U.S. presence. Additionally, there are 33 electric vehicle charging stations at nine stores on the West Coast.
